Plymouth Area League

What Is The Competition All About?

The Plymouth Area League is a long established team competition amongst local golf clubs which, as the name suggests, are all in the Plymouth area.

The area itself was originally defined as the "catchment" area of the transmitter operated by Plymouth Sound radio station, the competition's first sponsors who continued to support the event for many years.

Eventually, however, their sponsorship finished but the competition format was so popular with the golf clubs that it continued without support other than from the clubs themselves.

What's The Position Now?

The situation changed for the better when Plymouth Golf Centre opened the driving range in 2006 and readily agreed to become the competition sponsors from 2007, partly as a thank you to all the local golfers who so enthusiastically utilised the ranges practice facilities from the day it opened. The format remains the same, a very successful, tried and tested formula, but the players now have a major prize to aim for once more!

How Is The Competition Organised

There are 6 teams in the League from Devon and 6 from Cornwall who play in separate leagues in a season-long weekly competition, starting in May and finishing in September.

The winners of the Devon League play the winners of the Cornwall League in the final on a neutral course.

There are 10 players in each team with handicaps up to 24 but no more than 5 players may have a handicap of between scratch and 5. The matches are played in a 4 ball better-ball format with the pair's difference limited to 7. These rules relating to handicapping mean that many more players are eligible to represent their club in a prestigious competition which was one of the original objects of the organisers.

Points Mean Prizes!

Every member of both teams in the final receives an individual trophy and the winning team receives the main award to be displayed in their clubs' trophy cabinet for the next twelve months. The awards are presented at a celebration dinner after the final hosted by Plymouth Golf Centre. In addition to these prizes Plymouth Golf Centre also provide the major prize for the winning club team which is a weekend away playing golf in France organised by Brittany Ferries!

The 2007 winners, Looe Golf Club, and the successful 2009 club, Staddon Heights, both took a large party of club members on the French weekend with their winning team which made the trip a very memorable Club activity.
